Warm Days, Cool Nights

Vom Kalk
2023 Riesling Kabinett Trocken ‘Vom Kalk’ (Georg Albrecht Schneider)
Sale Price $13.99 – $142.70 case of twelve
If you’re a terroir denier, then kindly keep away from the Vom Kalk. By isolating a vineyard of Riesling grown in a chalky soil, Schneider has made a crisp white with a bone-dry finish. The aroma is all Riesling but the palate shows just a touch of fruit poking through the chalky dryness. This will be a great match with a seared mustardy bluefish and a tomato salad.
Aligoté
2023 Bourgogne Aligoté (Domaine Sylvain Langoureau)

Who could have guessed that Aligoté is now fashionable? Well, we did. We’ve always enjoyed its lean crispness and its racy acidity. Even a fatter, riper version like this 2023 retains its lively balance and juicy nectarine fruit. Try this with a stuffed pork loin and sautéed cabbage.
Douro Branco
2024 Douro Branco 'Crasto' (Quinta do Crasto)

The Douro Valley in Northern Portugal is still dominated by Port production, but the quality of its table wines continues to improve. Crasto’s 2024 Branco is a complex dry white made from the native grapes Viosinho, Gouveio, and Rabigato. Each grape contributes its own acidity, texture, and fruit leading to a rich, round palate soak. Have this with a seafood stew involving cod, clams, and corn.
Nebbiolo
2019 Roero (Chiesa Carlo)

Since this Nebbiolo was a big hit at one of our recent Wednesday tastings, we were pleasantly surprised when we were subsequently able to get a better price for more. Chiesa Carlo’s Roero is a small-production red made from hand-harvested Nebbiolo, and aged 24 months in large barrels. The 2019 is beautifully mature with plummy fruit and a fine earthy finish. Great for braised beef and a runny cheese.
Boal de Arousa
2024 Albariño (Boal de Arousa)

The Rias Baixas DO was established in the mid-eighties. Since then plantings and production of Albariño have increased tenfold. Unfortunately, high yields from young vines have led to some dilute wines. Not so here. The Tarrio family caught the Albariño bug at the right time by planting their vines in 1985. The 40-year-old vineyard now yields superb wines. The 2024 has peachy and floral aromas along with a crisp and minerally finish. This is a wonderful choice for scallops.
Bourgogne Rouge
2023 Bourgogne Rouge (Stéphane Brocard)

It’s nice to be surprised in finding an agreeable Burgundy for twenty dollars. Stéphane Brocard’s 2023 is ripe and ready with cherry fruit, mild tannins, and a fine dry finish. Give it a slight chill and serve with roast chicken and potato salad.

In lieu of a full food feature, this is just a quick reminder that we carry fresh ovoline mozzarella from Rhode Island’s excellent Narragansett Creamery.
$6 per 8 oz. cup, each containing two 4 oz. pieces. We also occasionally have their Burrata for $11, though this is harder to keep in stock. Either way, bring on the ripe tomatoes; there really is no better combo in the summer!

Great values continue to emerge from Portugal. Espiga is a ripe, fruity, and peppery blend of grapes native to Lisboa. Fine with simple grilled food and pasta.
